Matt Gardiner

oriboticist, multimedia artist and programmer

Matthew Gardiner has created an aura of innovation around his practice simply by following his passion for origami, code, and interactive new media. Graduating in 1997 with a BFA Photography from Victorian College of the Art, Matthew worked with Drome Pty Ltd, and trained in new media under the mentorship of Peter Hennessey and Patricia Piccinini where he developed a solid grounding in new media and strengthened his love for the arts.

Matthew Gardiner's recent works are a hybrid of origami and technology. Since 2005, Gardiner has built a full scale Origami House from 1 square km of paper, directed Folding Australia (2005 and 2007): Australia's first international Origami Convention, toured Oribotics in Belgium and Holland, completed an Australia Council residency in Tokyo where he developed a new generation of light interactive folding robots for Oribotics [laboratory], starred as an Origami presenter on ABC Sunday Arts for a 16 week season, installed over 7000 paper cranes at Melbourne's Federation Square, travelled to Pasadena California to present a paper at the 4th Origami Science and Mathematics Conference, and premiered Oribotics [network] at the 2007 Melbourne International Arts Festival. He is about to undertake a 3 month residency in Germany.

Gardiner collaborates with composers, musicians, technicians, and the industrial sector during the creative process. Exhibitions of his work have been shown in Australia, Europe, and Asia. Matthew started Airstrip in 1998 to provide a commercial take off point for all of his artistic activities. Airstrip consults in solutions for web, new media, and origami.
